Pearls begin with irritation. An oyster doesn’t wake up one morning and decide to make jewelry. A tiny grain of sand, a parasite, or some other unwelcome intruder finds its way inside the shell. Unable to remove it, the oyster coats the irritation with layer after layer of a smooth substance called nacre until, over time, something beautiful is formed.
It’s amusing when you think about it. The elegant pearl necklace displayed in a jewelry store began as an oyster’s way of dealing with muck and misery. Yet people gladly pay thousands of dollars to wear what started as an underwater nuisance.
The apostle Paul gathered pearls of a different kind.
He stepped into the dark, murky waters of first-century ministry when following Jesus could cost a person everything. He preached Christ in cities where the gospel was unwelcome, challenged religious traditions he had once defended, crossed dangerous seas, walked lonely roads, and faced robbers, angry mobs, prisons, beatings, and betrayal. Every journey carried another peril, but God faithfully brought him through each one. Those hardships became pearls of wisdom that still encourage believers two thousand years later.
Most Christians in the Western world know little of that level of persecution. We may face ridicule, rejection, or inconvenience, but few endure what Paul endured. Yet around the world, many believers still suffer greatly for the name of Christ.
Take heart. God never wastes suffering that is surrendered to Him. Every trial endured in faith forms another pearl—pearls of wisdom to encourage others, pearls of steadfast faith that glorify Christ, and pearls of eternal value that will never lose their beauty in the kingdom of God.

Love today’s alliterative title: “Paul’s Perils and Pearls!” Whenever I feel like I am suffering, I just read that passage in 2 Corinthians about how Paul suffered. That puts my light and momentary troubles in perspective! Thank you for this reminder and have a blessed day, Eric!

Thanks Heather, my wife and I read that passage last night and I just sat there shocked by how much Paul suffered for Christ…but he counted it joy to suffer for his Lord. What do I really have to complain about?
