Got Weakness?

Where are you weakest? Physically? Mentally? Emotionally? Spiritually? Nobody wants to be weak, yet life in a fallen world guarantees that every one of us carries some burden that feels too heavy to bear. For many, it becomes the prayer request that never seems to leave the list.

When I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, I had no idea what the future would hold. I sought the Lord earnestly for healing. I attended healing services, had pastors and ministers lay hands on me countless times, and prayed with faith that God would restore my body. I wanted to leave no avenue unexplored if healing was His will.

Nineteen years later, the honest truth is that I am noticeably weaker than I was when this journey began.

Does that mean God doesn’t heal? Absolutely not! I believe with all my heart that He is still the Great Physician. My wife and I continue to pray for healing—for ourselves and for anyone facing sickness, weakness, or infirmity. But God is not a genie who exists to fulfill our wishes. Sometimes His answer is “yes.” Sometimes it is “wait.” And sometimes, as painful as it is, His answer is “no.”

That is where Paul’s perspective changes everything. He had sought the Lord multiple times to remove a “thorn in the flesh” infirmity, but the Lord said “no”. However, God’s refusal to remove the thorn did not make Paul weaker; it drove him closer to the One whose strength never fails. Weakness became the doorway through which God’s grace was displayed.

The same is true for us. If our weakness causes us to depend on Christ more deeply, pray more earnestly, trust more completely, and cling more tightly to His promises, then what appears to be our greatest limitation may actually become our greatest source of spiritual strength. When we finally reach the end of ourselves, we discover that God’s strength was waiting there all along…and He is always stronger than the strongest among us.

God has opened doors of conversation and brought divine appointments that never would have happened without muscular dystrophy. I’ve been able to testify of Gods grace in the midst of personal frailty. Don’t let your weakness rob you of confidence in God, make it carry your testimony of Gods sustaining power!

  1. dr. Bob Jones Senior said “man’s extremity is God‘s opportunity “. God wants us to run to him first. Use his unlimited strength first. And be protected in his omnipotent hand first. Like a strong tower we get to run to him for protection and strength in times of trouble. praying for you and your wonderful family today.

  3. Thank you for sharing this timely post today Eric – a day where my brain injury has been laid open in a very public way and even questioned. It is painful and frustrating when such things happen and I can’t fully describe my struggles with memory and confusion. I pointed to the pulpit where God has enabled me to preach regardless of my condition, I give Him all the glory for His using me to serve.
