The Courage of Shammah

“And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.
But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.”

2 Samuel 23:11-12

David’s mighty men were warriors
through and through.

Some would say they were just “brute killers”, but that’s not the case at all.

These mighty men were the best special forces operators of their day.
Not only were they skilled in warfare and fighting, but they fought with courage.

Shammah the Hararite was a
mighty man of principle and courage.

He was a man who was willing to stand and fight for what was RIGHT.

The Philistines had taken control of a field of lentils and chased off the citizenry.
That field and food supply didn’t belong to them and had to be taken back…enter Shammah the Hararite.

The Bible says that this mighty man marched right into the middle of the field and reclaimed it.
When the enemy came to remove him
from the field, he killed them all.

I’m not glorifying killing, violence,
or death…and I never will.

I am, however, applauding a man who had the courage and will to say “NO” to an enemy force who came to steal, kill, and destroy.

Shammah had the principle to say “NO” to his enemy, and he had the courage to boldly declare “NO MORE” in the face of evil.
He’s the type we should emulate…
and those in our “Christian crew” should have such courage and moral principle also.

Christian courage is contagious, so be courageous!
