The Obedient King

Presidents, kings, and even dictators are rarely without close advisors. These men and women offer counsel regarding decisions both great and small. When the eyes of the world and foreign adversaries are upon you, it matters what you say, what you do, and how you conduct yourself. Optics are everything, and wise leaders know the value of good advisors.

Now consider King Jesus. The most powerful Person ever to walk the earth had no need for advisors. With a word, He could command legions of angels to destroy every enemy, yet there was no danger He would “go rogue” like a reckless dictator with unchecked power. Jesus was perfectly in control…His only advisor was His Father.

Earthly leaders need advisors to protect them from selfish ambition and foolish mistakes. But Jesus had one holy ambition: to obey His Father. His words were clear — He did not seek His own will but the will of the One who sent Him.

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4) He lived every moment in complete obedience, knowing His time on earth was short and His mission was vital for the salvation of humanity.

If King Jesus, with all power in heaven and earth, submitted Himself wholly to the Father, how much more must we as His soldiers walk in obedience? Our faithful obedience requires a heart that treasures God’s Word and will above all else today.

  1. This is a great reminder to seek his “marching orders” daily. Often my mind is filled with demands and to-dos for the day, so I need to stop and pray for God to help me prioritize my day. What is His will for me in this moment?
