When God chose David, He did not select the strongest, tallest, or most impressive candidate. David wasn’t even invited to the lineup. While others looked at outward appearance of his bigger, stronger brothers…God was already examining the hearts of each brother. Scripture tells us that God found David—a reminder that the Lord is actively watching, searching, and discerning every life.
That truth should give us pause. If God were to testify about us today, what would He say? Would He see a heart fully committed to Him—or one divided by competing allegiances?
To be a person “after God’s own heart” carries a double meaning. First, it means modeling our heart after God’s heart—growing to love what He loves and hate what He hates. David wasn’t perfect, but he was sensitive to sin, quick to repent, and deeply aware of his need for God’s mercy. His life reflected humility, reverence, and a desire for righteousness.
Second, it means chasing after God’s heart—actively pursuing His will and His desires. David sought the Lord in prayer, in worship, and in decision-making. Whether facing giants, ruling a nation, or repenting in brokenness, David consistently turned his attention back to God.
This kind of heart does not develop accidentally. It requires diligence in prayer, daily focus on the Lord, and a willingness to surrender our own agendas. A divided heart drifts easily, but a devoted heart stays anchored.
God is still watching lives today. He is still seeking men and women who will pursue Him—not just in words, but in devotion. May we be found faithful, wholeheartedly seeking to know and follow the heart of God.

This devotional reminds me of the encouraging truth that we may be rejected by the world but accepted by God to serve Him – hallelujah 🙌 Thank you for sharing this today brother Eric. God bless you today 🙏

Thanks brother, so true…as my former Pastor Larry Baker used to say, “God doesn’t make junk, you’re made for a purpose.”
Have a great day, brother Alan!

Thank you for this reminder today. I smiled when I saw the topic. My husband and I just saw the animated movie, David, produced by Angel Studios. It was amazing! So inspiring to see David’s faith and courage. May we all strive to be men and women after God’s own heart!
