Our Natural Praise

Praise is one of the most natural things a Christian can do. Psalm 33 calls God’s people to rejoice, sing, and make music to the Lord. Harps, stringed instruments, and joyful voices were all used to glorify God. The instrument itself wasn’t the focus—God was. Whether accompanied by music or spoken with trembling lips, praise has always been the natural language of those who know the Lord.

The late prayer warrior and evangelist Henry Gruver understood this. After spending decades walking through cities and nations, praying over them and interceding for people, he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. His doctor’s report was grim, but Henry’s immediate response was, “Well, praise the Lord!” Thinking he hadn’t understood, the doctor repeated the seriousness of the diagnosis. Henry simply smiled and answered again, “Praise the Lord, doctor!” Years of walking with God had taught him that every burden belonged in the Lord’s hands. This diagnosis was no different. God was still God.

What is heavy on your heart today? What is pulling at your joy? What feels like a lead weight hanging on your praise? The enemy would love for your worship to be silenced by your circumstances. Instead, let your circumstances become another reason to trust God. Praise Him before the answer comes. Praise Him while the storm still rages. Praise Him because He is worthy, not because life is easy.

Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Lift your voice. If you have an instrument, play it skillfully unto the Lord. If all you have is your voice, use it. It is only natural for those who have been redeemed by Christ to praise the One who has redeemed them!

  1. Excellent post brother Eric, thank you 😊
My words in times of trials have been “God is still in control, He knows what He is doing” which has often met with incredulous looks. I look upwards to Him in all trials. God bless you and your family today brother 🙏

    1. My response is very similar, brother Alan! “God knew this would happen, He is not surprised, He will help me through it.”
What a blessing to have the gift of faith, and it only takes a bit to move a mighty mountain! God bless and keep you and your family, brother!🙏👍🏻

  2. This is one of my favorite verses! My mom used to quote that verse often, and we used to sing a song with those lyrics in church when I was a child. It’s amazing how God’s kingdom is full of paradoxes…praise Him in your suffering, trust Him in the midst of fear, give when you have nothing left. Let go and let God!

    1. That’s a great point Heather, those paradoxes are proof that our faith is not of this world but flies in the face of this material world. Christians are like salmon swimming upstream, with a destination, a purpose, and a bunch of resistance…but we swim on! Have a blessed day!🙏👍🏻

    1. And we just had a huge storm come through Michigan…God allows the storms but there was a beautiful rainbow afterward! My wife and I stood in awe, which is probably what those first moments in heaven will be like. Have a blessed day, Nancy!

  3. I often search for rainbows after a storm, but so far this year I haven’t spotted any. The rainbow you and your wife saw sounds spectacular! 🌈✝️🌈✝️🌈😁
