Guard Your Name

“Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?”
Psalm 41:5

What’s in a name? A lot.
Names are markers in history, and they carry the weight of a person’s accomplishments and failures during that time.

Five random names:
Jeffrey Dahmer
Fred Rogers
Daniel Boone
Adolf Hitler
D.L. Moody

Each of these men are deceased.
Yet, when you read their names, you get different feelings and memories based on the lives they led and the things they accomplished.
Even after death, names strike a chord.

You have a name.
God knows your name.
The devil knows your name.

God wants YOUR NAME to represent HIS NAME.
He wants us to be ambassadors for His kingdom in this sin-cursed world.
(2 Cor 5:20)
He wants our earthly name to represent His kindness, mercy, love, forgiveness, and wisdom.

The devil wants your name to be tied to sin and fear.
He wants people to hear your name and roll their eyes at your fears and your failures.
He loathes it when our names and our actions reflect Jesus Christ.

“When shall he die, and his name perish?”
Why do our enemies want our names to perish?
Because a name of righteousness carries a testimony of righteous actions…
And those righteous actions tend to motivate others to righteousness, also…even AFTER death.

This is why statues of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln are torn down and defaced by angry mobs…they hate those names.
This is why the name of Jesus Christ is still hated and used as a curse word.
(Why don’t people profane the names of Buddha or Mohammed, using them as curse words? Notice it’s always Jesus Christ used as angry profanity?)

Evil people HATE righteous names…they know which names threaten their evil agendas, and they want them blotted out.
Righteous martyrs are a threat to evildoers because people remember, exalt, and proclaim their names as examples to follow.

Guard your name, Christian.
Let your name represent the Lord, now while you’re alive and in the future after you’re gone.
Let it carry a testimony of HIS righteousness and YOUR obedience to Him.

  1. Well said indeed, I couldn’t agree more Eric! My name is important to me; first it was for my family honour, but now my name is 100% sold to serving Christ my Lord and Saviour. My daily prayer is that others will see Him in me and want to know more.
Thank you for your encouragement brother, God bless you today 🙏

    1. Thanks brother! It’s a topic that probably deserves a long series studied out, definitely an important point for me in my life.

Thanks for your encouragement, and your willingness to live for Christ and represent His name with your own!

      Blessings to you, my friend!

    1. I work in an office where most people swear. Four years ago we had five of the worst cussing sailors you’ve ever heard. All day long it was the f-bomb and J.C. this and that.

Even two (confessing) Christian co-workers were in on it! I talked with them twice and asked them to stop. They would stop then start up again a while later.

So I just prayed that God would shut down the profanity in the office…and today those five people (and others) no longer work there.
