Life After the Flood

“And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.”
Genesis 9:28

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sendai, Japan. Immediately the tsunami sirens began blaring, and the world watched in horror as a massive tsunami raced toward the coast. It had such power that it demolished everything in its path. Some 28,000 people perished in that historic event.

The tsunami also caused flooding and damage at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Sea water flooded the cooling pumps and the reactor began to meltdown. It was the worst nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

Perhaps you watched all of this unfold on television, just as I did. My lingering thought for the people of Japan was, “They’ll NEVER recover from this disaster. Japan is over.” Seems kind of silly now…but at the time, it was a very serious, life-impacting event.

It was kind of like Noah’s flood. Except Noah’s flood destroyed the known world. It wasn’t limited to Japan and the tragic deaths of 28,000 people. Everyone on the planet, except for Noah’s family of 8 souls, perished.

And yet, after that catastrophe, we come to Genesis 9:28 and see God give grace to Noah. The Lord allowed him to live 350 years after the flood.

As a matter of fact, you and I are descendants of Noah and therefore recipients of God’s grace toward him.

Whatever hard times and floodwaters are ahead for us…we serve a God who is able to give us life AFTER the floods of life come against us.

Japan rebuilt after that tsunami.
New York rebuilt after 9/11.
New Orleans rebuilt after Katrina.
Pearl Harbor rebuilt after the attack.
Europe rebuilt after WWII.

Trust God to lead you before, during, and after the floods of life come. There’s life after the flood, friends, though it looks bleak sometimes.

And even when we face our final flood in life, God has promised eternal life for those who have saving faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
